Importance of empathy in product management

Empathy is the ability to put ourselves in another person's shoes and comprehend their needs and feelings. A friendly, empathetic approach is characterised by warmth and openness. This does not, however, imply that you have to like the other person and that you must always be cheerful and smiling. It also does not imply that you should sugarcoat messages, just give people what they want to hear, or put up with problems. Contrarily, as the following example demonstrates, you can empathically address harmful and improper behaviour.

Consider John as a key stakeholder who rarely shows up to the product planning sessions you've invited him to. John is a sales representative. Instead, he speaks with you directly to request modifications to the product roadmap. Then you should think about requesting that John alter his behaviour and show up to the strategy meetings so that he may express his change requests. However, use a compassionate approach: Discover John's situation first, and endeavour to comprehend why he skipped the meetings. It can be challenging for him to engage in the workshops due to his heavy workload, lack of free time, or continuing conflict with another stakeholder. While doing so, be honest.

That's crucial for product managers who don't have transactional authority, who aren't in charge of the development teams or stakeholders, but who nonetheless need to direct and align the people in order to produce successful products.

To put it another way, learning to be more perceptive of the needs and sentiments of others will improve your capacity to lead them. But keep in mind that your empathy must be genuine. People will eventually figure out what is going on and are likely to lose trust in you if you act like you care or that you empathise only to get them to do something.

Second, having empathy for consumers and customers allows you to comprehend their demands on a deeper level. Even though we have access to more data and robust analytics tools than ever before, I feel that interacting with a select group of users and customers with respectful interest and sincere warmth is the most effective approach.

Third, practising self-compassion and empathetic behaviour toward yourself makes you happier. It increases your capacity for empathy and reduces the likelihood that you will neglect your own needs or, for example, consistently work too hard.

How can you improve you empathy skills in product management

Not only is listening essential for a fruitful dialogue. Understanding someone's emotions and underlying requirements is essential. This requires active, engaging listening on the listener's part. Whether you like the person or not and whether you share or reject their opinions, you must listen with the goal of understanding the other person. Giving them your entire attention, showing real interest in what they have to say, being respectfully curious, and cultivating an open mind are all necessary for this, which I'll go into more depth about in the following section.

But this also makes it harder for you to relate to and understand the person. It also runs the danger of dismissing a recommendation that could ultimately prove to be wise. Therefore, it is beneficial to cultivate an open, inquisitive mind and show genuine interest in what the other person has to say, how they are feeling, and what their core needs are. Naturally, this does not imply that you should abstain from expressing your ideas. However, keep your opinions in check and be prepared to be challenged.

Understanding another person's point of view and seeing things from their perspective are necessary for effective empathy. You can accomplish this by putting yourself in their situation and speaking from their point of view.
